Babu’s tips

1) A short game drive is a good game drive!! You don't want to get to the stage when kids get hot and bothered. Less is more unless you can guarantee a good spot.

2) Never wear blue - Tsetse fly love it.

3) Focus on the little things. Birds, tracks, poo, different trees and bushes - get your guides to tell the stories - they will have a story for everything..... what does Boabab fruit taste like? How many Superb Starlings can you spot?

4) Look for exclusive use of a vehicle. You don't want to be forever having to police your children with others in the car. You don't want to have to sit for hours while your co-passenger takes that winning photo of ANOTHER impala.... you want to do it on your own terms. You can pay for exclusive use of vehicles if need be.

5) Watch Dynasties, Big Cat Diary or similar before you go - gets family interested.

6) Swimming pools are fantastic. So many camps have them now, and there is nothing better after a sweaty game drive than having a dip - and a great extra amusement for kids.

7) Travel light - camps wash your clothes!  AND there is so much to do that your kids do not need endless toys, or electronics.  Allow them to make their own entertainment from the surrounding.

8) There WILL be campfires - you could pack some marshmallows!!

9) Bring a star chart with you or download Stargazer app before you go!

10) Take time to sit and wait.  You will be amazed at how much more engaged your children can be than even you.  Don't rush it, as they say in Swahili "Pole Pole."
